Why Every Comedian Should Become A Renaissance Man

This is written for standup comedians, but I think really applies to anybody who wants to be more creative.

I love doing standup comedy, but I love a lot of other things too.  Things like graphic design, sketch comedy, photography, hip-hop, video editing, poker, martial arts, girls…the list goes on.  Each of my outside interests shape and define my stand-up, both directly and indirectly.

I’ve talked to a lot of people who define themselves as “Standup Comedian.”  It has a ring of romanticism to it, but being solely a stand up is very limiting.  Connect Comedy has a great post about why it’s time to stop calling yourself a standup comedian.  The blog discusses how there’s so much more comedy opportunities out there besides JUST standup, each of which will intern help you become better at standing up.

If you’re a funny person, why not try writing some short film or sketch ideas and producing them?  Or perhaps taking an improv class, or starting a comedy podcast, or writing a funny blog?

But why stop with just comedy endeavors?  My standup act is usually shaped and created when I’m not trying to do “comedy” at all.  I credit my onstage energy and love for theatrics to growing up watching the male soap opera that is pro-wrestling.  Seeing the “Heart Break Kid” Shawn Michaels come out to pyrotechnics with a girl on each arm, or zip-lining over 10,000 screaming fans from the top of the rafters to the ring.  That’s the energy and enthusiasm I want the audience to feel during my standup shows.

My introduction to performing as a kid came in the form of cheap magic tricks.  The goal of magic tricks or illusions is the same as comedy…get your audience to think one thing, then at the last minute rip them of their path and slap them with the unexpected.

Always be aware of how concepts from non-comical things can translate to your standup act.  Graphic design got me thinking of the importance of “negative space” in my act.  In design negative space, or an area of the design without graphics, draws the viewers eye to the more important space of the image.  In standup, a little silence can help emphasize the sound that comes before or after it.

Texas Hold’em helps me figure out how to “read the other players,” or figure out what the audience and other comics are feeling or thinking.  It also helps me to think about multiple different things at once, rather it’s pot-odds, tells, position, and stack sizes or my next bit, audience response, and time left in my set.

Designing a standup set in songwriting terms helps me think about when I need a verse (something more thought provoking or lyrical), and when I need a chorus (something catchy that the audience can retell to their friends after the show).

Ultimate Fighting Championship has helped me learn how to choke out an angry heckler that won't shut up during my set.

So be a Standup Comedian, but always be a Renaissance Man and figure out how everything else you do can help your standup act, and how your standup act can help everything else you do.

What searches lead people to this site??

People searching for "Saudi Ladies" are probably very disappointed when the wind up here. Here are the top 10 things people searched for in the past month that landed them on my website.  Finally Laffs Comedy Club is paying off.  Since I just mentioned it again there, maybe even more people will fall on this page in hopes of getting so stage time at the debunked Laffs.  The top result lead to 3 people, who wanted nothing more than to see some pictures of Saudi Ladies, to be very disappointed to find nothing than a white rapper freestlying to some Saudi Arabian delegates.
