Getting raped by 5 guys....funny or traumatic?

Recently a stand-up audience member and blogger attended a comedy show where she claims she was verbally abused by the comic on stage, Daniel Tosh.  According to her blog, Tosh took the mic and started talking about rape.  The girl yelled out, “Rape jokes are never funny,” and the comedian responded in typical Tosh fashion, by tearing her apart (verbally) from the stage, saying something along the lines of “It would be funny if this girl was raped by 5 guys right now.”  She posted her traumatizing story on her blog, and the internet community was outraged that a comedian….at an adult comedy club….could touch on such a touchy subject.  Daniel Tosh apologized to the girl the next day, via Twitter.

I'll be the black sheep in this dysfunctional comedy family.  Just hours before I heard this story, I was just telling my co-worker how fucked up Daniel Tosh is....but also how hilarious he is. I usually don't like comics with his 'style' but I think his stand up is generally hilarious. I by know means think his "That girl should get raped" comment is funny, but I do however condone free speech to a possibly crazy degree. The girl had the right to engage Tosh, but in a way she has the responsibly to take the verbal abuse that was slung at her, the same way Tosh has to take the responsibly of losing some fans for her response (to his response). Who's to say what's "too far" for a comic to go? His rape response isn't too different from the old "I don't come to your job and slap the dick out of your mouth" retort. When you're going to see live comics like Daniel Tosh or Mike Long, you're temporally entering their dark world....a very different world than our normal society. Perhaps the club needs "Enter at your own Risk" signs, perhaps Tosh loses some fans and sponsors, or perhaps Tosh was raped at a young ways and this is his destructive way of dealing with it. Perhaps this girl's blog just got more hits than it ever has. Rather you like Tosh or not, and agree or disagree that his response was appropriate, the stand up stage is a place unlike anywhere else on this planet, where people can say pretty much whatever they want. That's what's so beautiful and ugly about this art....

I think the only fair thing for Daniel Tosh to do to rectify the emotional pain he has caused me through this fiasco, is make a public apology to me on Twitter and apologize for apologizing for his joke.
